WASHINGTON, DC – JANUARY 31, 2018: The US-Qatar Business Council (USQBC) and the Embassy of the State of Qatar hosted Qatar's Minister of Economy & Commerce, Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, for a business lunch to address senior representatives of the US business community.
The Minister said that Qatar’s real GDP growth is expected to increase by 2.6% in 2018 despite some of the region tensions. He outlined investment incentives for US companies to operate in Qatar.
The Minister emphasized major reforms to labor and outlined several pro-business initiatives for foreign investment in Qatar including:
Visa upon arrival for businessmen and women
Allowing 100% foreign ownership of a company
Modernizing its sponsorship laws that encourage hiring of foreign workers
More humane and efficient labor reforms, including increased enforcement of violations
The Minister focused on Qatar’s dedication to international companies operating there, emphasizing that “Qatar is committed to creating a strong investment climate.” The Minister stressed that Qatar would serve as a hub for exporting to Iraq and other neighboring countries as rebuilding gets underway in the region.
He also highlighted the involvement of US companies in Qatar saying that, “more than 500 companies are currently established as partnerships between Qatari and American entities.”
“There are 102 US companies operating in Qatar 100% owned by American citizens, 20 are involved in gas and petroleum, and a total of 40 US companies are operating in Qatar Financial Centre,” he added.
The Minister stressed that Qatar has faced regional adversity by making its economy more accessible to the world while still honoring their contracts with GCC nations. He said, “Qatar has successfully established direct commercial routes with a number of strategic hubs around the world.”
The lunch forms part of a series of events this week as the largest ever official delegation of Qatari officials visit the United States. Other members of the delegation include Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Energy and Industry.
“These events have been successful in updating the business community about economic modernization in Qatar and about the opportunities for expanding trade between the two countries,” said Ambassador Anne Patterson, president of the US-Qatar Business Council.
“Qatar remains open for business and committed to strengthening its economic ties with the United States. The US-Qatar Business Council will continue to provide opportunities for discussion and engagement between US business representatives and Qatar to create further jobs and investment for both countries,” she said, “The US-Qatar Business Council sincerely thanks the Minister of Economy & Commerce for his presentation and we look forward to facilitating future discussions.”
About the Council
The US-Qatar Business Council is a non-profit, private sector organization which works to develop and sustain strong commercial, economic and trade relationships between the two countries and provides a forum for discussion of issues of interest to American companies doing or planning to do business in Qatar.
US businesses exported nearly $5 billion in goods to Qatar in 2016 and it is estimated one million American jobs are supported through business partnerships with Qatar. Qatar has announced $29 million in major projects in 2018 which American companies can compete for, generating up to 100,000 new American jobs. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is projected to generate up to $10 billion in business opportunities for US companies.
The Council also supports educational and cultural partnerships between Qatar and the United States.
واشنطن العاصمة - 31 كانون الثاني/يناير 2018: استضاف مجلس الأعمال الأمريكي القطري وسفارة دولة قطر وزير الاقتصاد والتجارة القطري الشيخ أحمد بن جاسم آل ثاني على غداء عمل من أجل مخاطبة كبار الممثلين عن مجتمع الأعمال الأمريكي.
وقال الوزير إنه من المتوقع أن يزداد نمو إجمالي الناتج المحلي الفعلي في قطر بنسبة 2.6% في 2018 رغم بعض التوترات في المنطقة. وسلّط الضوء على المحفزات الاستثمارية التي تحض الشركات الأمريكية على العمل في قطر.
وشدّد الوزير على أبرز الإصلاحات في مجال العمل وألقى الضوء على العديد من المبادرات الداعمة للأعمال لاستقطاب الاستثمارات الأجنبية في قطر، من بينها:
وركّز الوزير على تفاني قطر أمام الشركات الدولية العاملة فيها، مشدّدًا على أن "قطر ملتزمة خلق بيئة استثمارية متينة". وأوضح الوزير أن قطر ستكون مركز تصدير إلى العراق وغيره من الدول المجاورة في ظل انطلاق عملية إعادة الإعمار في المنطقة.
كما ألقى الضوء على انخراط الشركات الأمريكية في قطر، قائلًا إن "أكثر من 500 شركة تمثّل حاليًا شراكات بين كيانات قطرية وأمريكية".
وأضاف أن "ثمة 102 شركة أمريكية عاملة في قطر مملوكة بالكامل (بنسبة 100%) لمواطنين أمريكيين، حيث تُعنى 20 منها بالنفط والغاز، في حين تعمل 40 شركة في المجموع في مركز قطر للمال".
وأوضح الوزير أن قطر واجهت صعوبات إقليمية لجهة جعل اقتصادها أكثر نفاذًا أمام العالم والاستمرار في الوقت نفسه بتنفيذ موجباتها في إطار العقود المبرمة مع دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي. وقال إن "قطر نجحت في إقامة طرق تجارية مباشرة مع عدد من المراكز الاستراتيجية حول العالم".
ويأتي الغداء في إطار سلسلة من الفعاليات التي ستعقد هذا الأسبوع في ظل زيارة أكبر وفد رسمي على الإطلاق من المسؤولين القطريين إلى الولايات المتحدة. ومن بين أعضاء الوفد الآخرين نائب رئيس الوزراء القطري ووزير الدولة لشؤون الدفاع، ونائب رئيس الوزراء ووزير الدولة للشؤون الخارجية، ووزير المالية، ووزير الطاقة والصناعة.
من جهتها، قالت السفيرة آن باترسون، رئيسة مجلس الأعمال الأمريكي القطري، إن "هذه الفعاليات نجحت في إطلاع مجتمع الأعمال على آخر تطورات التحديث الاقتصادي في قطر وعلى فرص تعزيز التجارة بين البلدين".
وأضافت أن "قطر تبقى منفتحة على الأعمال وملتزمة بتعزيز روابطها الاقتصادية بالولايات المتحدة. وسيواصل مجلس الأعمال الأمريكي القطري توفير فرص المناقشة والتعاون بين ممثلي الشركات الأمريكية وقطر لاستحداث المزيد من الوظائف والاستثمارات لصالح البلدين". وختمت بالقول إن "المجلس يتقدم بأحر الشكر لوزير الاقتصاد والتجارة على العرض الذي قدمه ونتطلع إلى تسهيل المزيد من المحادثات المستقبلية".
إن مجلس الأعمال الأمريكي القطري هو منظمة خاصة غير ربحية تعمل على إنشاء علاقات قوية في مجال التجارة والاقتصاد والتبادل التجاري والحفاظ عليها بين البلدين، بالإضافة إلى توفير منتدى لمناقشة المسائل التي تهم الشركات الأمريكية التي تزاول أو تعتزم مزاولة الأعمال في قطر.
قامت الشركات الأمريكية بتصدير سلع إلى قطر ناهزت قيمتها 5 مليارات دولار في 2016 ويقدّر أن شراكات الأعمال مع قطر تدعم مليون وظيفة للأمريكيين. وقد أعلنت قطر عن تنفيذ مشاريع كبيرة بتكلفة 29 مليون دولار في 2018 يمكن للشركات الأمريكية تقديم العروض للفوز بها، ما سيستحدث نحو 100 ألف وظيفة جديدة للأمريكيين. ومن المزمع أيضًا أن تسفر استضافة قطر لبطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم 2022 عن فرص عمل تصل قيمتها إلى 10 مليارات دولار بالنسبة للشركات الأمريكية.
كما يدعم المجلس شراكات تعليمية وثقافية بين قطر والولايات المتحدة.
