Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy) is a US-based oil and gas exploration and production company with operations in the United States, the Middle East, North Africa, and South America. Oxy is the largest oil producer in Texas and the largest natural gas producer and second-largest oil producer in California, with additional operations in Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Oxy is the fourth-largest U.S. oil and gas company, based on equity market capitalization of $47 billion, with more than 9,000 employees. As of 2010, the company has approximately 30,000 employees and contractors worldwide. Occidental’s oil and gas operations are focused in three core areas, the United States, the Middle East/North Africa, and South America.
Occidental’s Middle East and North Africa operations accounted for 35% of its worldwide production in 2009, producing approximately 254,000 barrels of oil equivalent. The region also holds 29 percent of the company’s proved reserves. In the Middle East, Occidental has operations in Libya, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq and Yemen. Oxy is the second-largest oil producer in Oman. In Qatar, it is a partner in the giant Dolphin natural gas project, which delivers gas to Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
