Emir Approves Amendments for Labor Laws

The following is a translation of the Emir's Approved Amendments:   HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has issued today Law No. (1) of the year 2015, amending some provisions of the Labour Act No. (14 ) of the year 2004.   Article No 2 of Law No 1 of 2015 has replaced Article 66 of Law No 14 of 2004 with a new text. It stipulates that salary and other amounts due to the worker shall be paid in the Qatari currency.   Remuneration of the workers appointed on the basis of an annual or monthly salary shall be paid, at least, once a month, while that of all the other workers shall be paid, at least, once every two weeks.   The employer must transfer the remuneration to the bank account of the worker at any of the financial institutions in Qatar, in a way that allows the worker to withdraw it at the designated time according to the stipulations of the law. The employer shall not be discharged from the responsibility of paying the wage otherwise.   A decision regarding the regulation to protect the remuneration of workers shall be issued by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs.   Article No. 3   Addition of article No 145 repetitive   Violators of the new law shall be punished by a prison term of not more than a month and/or a fine not less than QR 2,000 and not exceeding QR6,000.   Article No 4 of the new law stipulates that employers shall modify their situation in accordance with the provisions of this law within a period of six months of its implementation. However, the Minster of Labour and Social Affairs may extend the grace period to a similar period or periods.   Article No. 5   All competent entities shall implement the law, each in its area, and it shall be published in the official gazette.
