Qatar Population Doubles

Qatar's population doubled over the past six years to 1.69 million, according to a census conducted earlier this year. The previous census, taken in 2004, indicated a population of 744,000. The 1997 census showed a population of 522,000 while in 1970 the total population was 111,000. Although the natural growth rate of Qatar's native population is quite high, most of the exponential increase is attributed to an influx of expatriate workers to implement the country's rapid and ambitious infrastructure projects.
